The federal Synar Amendment requires that states enact laws that prohibit the sale and distribution of tobacco products to persons under the age of 18 and to effectively enforce those laws. The Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services contracted with Wheeler Clinic's Connecticut Clearinghouse to conduct a comprehensive Tobacco Merchant Education Campaign.
A key element of the campaign is the Tobacco Merchant and Community Education Steering Committee led by the Clearinghouse. Membership includes tobacco retailers, state agency partners, students, and prevention agencies.
The Tobacco Merchant
Education Campaign
contains information on Connecticut's tobacco laws for owners, managers and employees of establishments that sell tobacco products. The campaign materials include an educational video, tip sheets, the Notice of Connecticut Tobacco Laws, paycheck stuffers and a facsimile of a cash register sticker.
The video can be viewed through the Tobacco Merchant Education Video link in the column to the left. The tip sheets, paycheck stuffers and Notice of Connecticut Tobacco Laws can be downloaded from the Fact Sheets column at the right. Contact Connecticut Clearinghouse at 1.800.232.4424 to request the cash register stickers.
