Course Description

More than half of Americans will be diagnosed with a mental health or substance use challenge in their life. Be ready to help a friend, family member or neighbor with our evidence-based, nationally recognized training.

Adult MHFA training gives you the skills to act. You'll be able to spot the signs that someone might be struggling, and then use proven strategies to help them. Your actions as a Mental Health First Aider help to create a healthier, more supportive community.

Studies of Adult MHFA have shown that it works. People who are trained in this program:

  • Show increased mental health literacy.
  • Show greater confidence and likelihood to help a person in distress.
  • Show reduced stigma and increased empathy towards adults with mental health challenges.
  • Use their skills and knowledge to manage their own mental wellbeing.

In this full-day training, you’ll learn how to help people ages 18 and older. Topics include anxiety, depression, psychosis and substance use. You’ll be able to:

  • Understand the impact of early intervention.
  • Recognize signs and symptoms with skills-based scenarios.
  • Explain and use the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE).
  • Address stigma and explain that recovery is possible.
  • Ensure safety and privacy during conversations.
  • Choose methods for self-care for yourself and others.
