Open to School Climate Coordinators Only

Course Description

Over half of young people with unmet mental health needs think no one would care if they got better. You can show them that recovery is possible with our trusted, evidence-based training.

Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adolescents ages 12-18. You’ll build skills and confidence you need to reach out and provide initial support to young people who are struggling. You’ll also learn how to help connect them to appropriate support.

Studies of Youth MHFA have shown that it works. People who are trained in YMHFA:

  • Show increased mental health literacy.
  • Show greater confidence and likelihood to help a young person in distress.
  • Show reduced stigma and increased empathy towards youth with mental health challenges.
  • Use their skills and knowledge to manage their own mental wellbeing.

When you support mental health early, young people can focus on learning, growing and being their best - at school and in life.

Learning Objectives

• Recognize common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD).
• Recognize common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges.
• Understand how to interact with a young person in crisis.
• Know how to connect a young person with help.
• Better understand trauma, substance use, self-care and the impact of social media and bullying.
